LI 203 AMERICAN LITERATURE I
This course surveys American literature from the Pre-Colonial period to the Civil War. Using early American literature as the subject and object of study, this course empowers students to explore issues and topics that include, but are not limited to: nationalism, American exceptionalism, industrialization, colonialization, race, racism, gender, and gender identification. Particular attention will be paid to the question of race and gender and the relationship between American history, culture, and writing. This survey course observes minoritized voices and literary diversity, with units that include texts representing African American, Native American, Latin American, and other subaltern communities. By analyzing literature from authors such as Frederick Douglass, Anne Bradstreet, and Phillis Wheatley, students will develop greater analytic skills, literary insight, and a deeper understanding of the main currents of American thought and culture. Lecture: 3 hours per week. 3 Credits. Prerequisites: EN 101 (Completion of EN 102 also recommended)
