MU 102 INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC THEORY
This class is an introduction to music (notes, chords, styles, sounds) for both beginners and experienced musicians. Classroom topics include an introduction to the keyboard, followed by note identification using the staff and clefs and rhythmic identification. Various styles of music are discussed, beginning with the Western European tradition, and moving through the various styles of American music: including march, ragtime, jazz, blues, rock, country. The course includes an introduction to music theory and culminates with an explanation of intervals and how they relate to chords and chord progressions, giving a musical overview of both large and small forms. Students will be expected to participate in a final project reflecting their own interest in music, to include subjects such as styles, albums, artists, DJ’ing, technology, or performance. 3 Credits
